Tenth Annual Weblog Awards: The 2010 Bloggies

Ten years ago, bloggers were joining webrings, ranting about the A-list blogs, and journaling about little girls on bikes. The Bloggies were born then and have been grown ever since, becoming the Web's largest blog awards ceremony. This is the 2010 Weblog Awards, where the Web will award the first Bloggies of the new decade.

Nominations close.
Wednesday, January 13
200 randomly selected voters receive an invitation to choose the finalists from a list of the most-nominated weblogs in ten random categories.
Monday, January 18
10:00 PM EST
Finalist voting closes. The five (or six for Weblog of the Year) weblogs with the most votes become finalists. I will solve any ties for fifth place.
Thursday, January 21
Finalists are announced and voting reopens to all to choose the winners.
Sunday, January 31
10:00 PM EST
Voting closes.
February / March
Winners are announced.

Okay, so there won't be a ceremony in the usual spot this year...let me mull this over and post an update when I figure out the best plan.

What the Winners Get

As is tradition with the Weblog Awards, the Weblog of the Year will receive 2,010 US cents (US$20.10).

South by Southwest Interactive offers Bloggie finalists a special discount to attend the festival. The cost of Interactive registration for Bloggie finalists is $395.

The categories seem to be finding their place, for not much is changing this year. Only one category is being removed due to lack of nominations:

Weblogs about movies, television, and/or theater.

Hall of Fame: Slashdot has won this category three or more times.

Best GLBT Weblog

Weblogs about gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender interests.

Best Topical Weblog

Weblogs with a definite topic other than the ones in the categories above.

Hall of Fame: Bookslut has won this category three or more times.

Best Teen Weblog

Weblogs written by those 19 and under.

Best Group Weblog

Weblogs written by an exclusive group.

Hall of Fame: Boing Boing has won this category three or more times.

Best Community Weblog

Weblogs where everyone is invited to post.

Hall of Fame: MetaFilter and PostSecret have won this category three or more times.

Best-Designed Weblog

Hall of Fame: Loobylu has won this category three or more times.

The best underrepresented weblogs.

Best New Weblog

Weblogs that began during the year 2009.

Lifetime Achievement

Webloggers who have been blogging since at least January 1, 2005.

This award may only be won once, so Jeffrey Zeldman, Evan Williams, Jason Kottke, Heather Powazek Champ, Tom Coates, Boing Boing, Slashdot, Heather B. Armstrong, and Fark.com are not eligible.

The winners will be announced on a date to be determined.
